The Family Photograph
November 9th, 2009As the years fly by the desire to capture life before it changes gets more urgent. Initially when you have a baby, time seems to stand still. Then, if you are lucky, number two makes his or her entrance, and you are caught up in a whirl wind of children’s parties, childhood illness and the general young family baggage. You get the family photography done and distributed to the grandparents. Then with, in retrospect, no warning, the little demanding bundles of joy turn five. School and all its’ accompanying challenges takes them over and starts the inevitable progression towards their ultimate independence from you and the core family unit. Then transition is accompanied by an amazing change in timescales. From this point on time appears to go into fast forward. The family portrait you carefully organized and budgeted for still proudly adorns both grand parents’ mantel pieces. But now when you look at the family photography you go into denial. As a cruel reverse to the fictional character ‘Dorian Gray’ the images in family photograph never change but the family members do. Sadly time is not so kind to the grown ups, whereas the children are blossoming into a handsome, large, young man and beautiful blonde young woman, mum and dad are moving more of less resignedly into middle age! In the family photograph you remain for ever 30 something, if only you could capture your bodies aging process so permanently.
After the hundredth subtle comment regarding the family photograph and it’s disparity from actuality, my mother in law breaks and asks out right, would I get a new family portrait done, please! Ok a new family photograph it must be. I then looked around locally, Hertfordshire, and via the internet to find the photographer who could best captured what I wanted to portray in our up to date family portrait. The photographer I chose turned out to be Hertfordshire base. This photographer had actually taken a baby portrait of my daughter for her first birthday. She’d just started walking, I remember propping her up against a sofa and scurrying out of the shot, full of anxiety that she might fall over. Anyway, the modern style and professionalism demonstrated then was still evident to this day and so I decided to use the same photographer again.
The family photography both mothers’ had been complaining about was never a great success. I’d made use of a special offer to use the school photographer for the family photograph and it was alright, but nothing special! I was determined to be more careful this time and do my homework. With the growth of digital photography and display of photographic work online, the research process proved to be easy. Are you trying not to spend a fortune? It just takes a little organization, planning and research to save money and look good on Halloween.
First for organization. Halloween comes every year, right. So, why not save Halloween gear just like Christmas gear. The day after Halloween just clean and store all items that can be reused for the same character or for any new character for another year. Take wigs for example, after a few years you have a collection, a little cleaning and styling and you can generate any number of characters for very little or no money.
Planning ahead is a must if you want to save money or win a costume contest. Insist that everyone decides on their character on or before October 1st. That way you have 30 days to find and purchase everything you need. I have made the selection as early as July, so that every detail can be taken care of in a creative manner. I know, not everyone can start planning for Halloween in July, but if you do you will have top notch, contest winning adult or child costumes. I know this helps for future years. but it is already October so let’s get to this year.
Selection of the character will determine the amount of research required to come up with an authentic looking costume. The key is to do something that looks good. I did not say copy the character, get close and look good. I have found that picking something well known and doing a fair job with hair, makeup and attire will win or place in the costume contest. You are not going up against professional costume and makeup people here, that is why a fair job looks great. Remember costume parties and trick or treating is done in low light levels, again that is why it is easy to look great. If you are going to the bright lights and TV camera close ups, you better get professional help.
When shopping for hair go to a wig shop. A cheap wig is much better than what you find at a costume store. Buying the cheapest of anything is not a good deal, remember we can save the wigs for years of use. Make up is another area that you will end up dripping and messy if you buy the costume shop cheap stuff. Depending on the character you may need to buy the attire from the costume store. That is unless you or someone you know is good with the sewing machine. You can always save money if you are lucky enough to find clothes and props to work with at yard sales, the Salvation Army Store, family or friends – any place with used items and clothes.

Do You Have Thoracic Back Pain?
June 13th, 2008Most of the time it is unusual for a person to suffer disc problems that are located in the middle and upper back, but thoracic back pains can at times be very painful and can be caused by a number of different medical conditions. When you feel pain such as this, it usually means there’s something going on in your insides and the pain is the only way for your body to alert you to the problem.
Many people who are suffering from chronic pain, and if it is lasting more than a month, could have a thoracic herniated disc, slipped disc or maybe it could be a degenerative disc disease that can be quite painful. If it is one of these problems, it is usually pretty easy for your doctor to diagnose with a simple x-ray.
Thoracic back pain occurs in an area at the center of the spine. It’s composed of twelve vertebrae that are formed along the middle of the back, where the rib cage is attached. The uppermost 9 vertebrae connect in front and forms a protective shied around the internal organs. The bottom three, while they still provide protection to the inner body, but are not connected and allows fluid movement.

Sometimes it may be caused by the upper back muscles being used in an odd fashion or can even be a result of bad posture in the center of the lumbar region, or lower back the middle and the upper back can also be affected.
A few remedies can work really well. Stretching exercises can reduce thoracic back pain. However the root cause of the pain should be first determined as this is of the utmost importance.
