Finding Used Moving Boxes For Your Big Move
April 13th, 2010Shifting is generally a troublesome task at every stage. From packing, to moving the stuff to the new location, to unpacking again; it is a process that is fraught with hassle. For those preparing to make a move, finding boxes to pack your things in, can be a challenge. Most people do not want to waste money on new boxes that are only going to be used once, so, an appropriate solution would be to look for used moving boxes. These are comparatively cheaper and easier to find.
A good place to start the search would be at your local supermarket. These stores tend to receive their products packed in boxes, so there is bound to be a vast supply waiting to be reused. You can ask the store manager or make arrangements with the delivery staff to provide you with some.
Apart from supermarkets, you can also consider trying your luck at electrical goods stores. They might have boxes from display or damaged items. The more adventurous can simply dig through the trash at the local mall; boxes and recyclables tend to be stored separately from the smellier rubbish, so you need not worry.
If you are enlisting the services of a moving company, you might be able to get a cheaper rate through them. Alternatively, there are websites that sell both new and old moving boxes. These can be purchased individually or at a discount if you buy them as a set. Some innovative websites also allow you to get them for free, by providing you with a list of people in your area who want to get rid of their boxes.
The recycling plant would be a good pit stop on your box hunting journey. Most stores and households get their recyclable trash delivered to these plants. You can call up the one nearest to you and check if you can get some boxes for a small price, or with the right negotiating skills, for free!
While you are sourcing different outlets to meet your packing needs, you shouldn’t overlook the ones closest to you. Ask around the neighborhood or among your group of friends, someone just might have some leftover boxes from their last move. The workplace is another option, check with your shipping department if they have any to spare or pick up some empty boxes from the storage room or the photocopying room.
A good plan would be to invest in new boxes for items that are going to remain in storage; for instance winter wear or fine dining sets that you do not use often. Instead of the run of the mill cardboard boxes, you might want to think about investing in more durable plastic ones, as these make better long term storage devices.
These tips should help you find used moving boxes to make your big move that much easier. Once you are done with them, be sure to pass them on so you can help someone one else out. You could also pass on some of these tips!
Need boxes for moving? Why not try using used moving boxes san Antonio, or even used shipping boxes! They’re much cheaper, and much more environmentally friendly too.
Having a Baby, How Much Does it Cost?
February 2nd, 2010Among baby food and diapers, accessories and clothes, baby sitter or nursery, at the end of the month the arrival of a baby will affect your budjet.
And spending increases gradually with the enlargement of the family.
Let’s see what impact more on the budget and how to keep costs under control.
Infants are the most expensive.
The economic impact is greater for a family is certainly linked to the arrival of the firstborn, especially during the first year of life.
These figures are from “dizziness”, so that very often we hear that the arrival of a baby, is almost a “second mortgage” for the family.
It was calculated that an infant costs to an average income family where both parents have a job, about 800 dollars per month.
These figures may discourage the idea of giving birth to one or more children, while finding some comfort in the following evaluations:
Spending tends to decrease slightly when the baby is a bit bigger, around three years old, but then rises again.
An initial decrease in costs occurs, however, for families whose children were fed with formula milk to weaning.
The second stage in which the expenditure has drastically come back is about two and a half years old, when finally the family budget gets rid of the economic impact of diapers and often the nursery or full time baby-sitting.
The second son is more economical
If the arrival of the firstborn is felt significantly on the household budget, the second son and then any subsequent impacting approximately 20 percent less than the first, precisely because the so-called economy of scale.
It is no coincidence that singles do spend more then families.
For example, for food at supermarket. The truth is that you spends less in proportion for a family package than a single dose.
Similarly, the cost of preparing a meal for three people are not much lower than those for four or five.
Also, should not be underestimated in this count also the possibility of reusing clothes and accessories, purchased earlier for the firstborn.
Saving is strong in the case of children of the same sex, possibly born in the same season, not always able to “recycle” many clothing articles.
However it is undeniable that families with two or more children should pay a greater economic effort to balance the budget at the end of the month.
It is no coincidence, in fact that in the past thirty years the number of children in American families has declined drastically and the number of children born per woman today it hard to deviate from an only child.

Breast Cancer Medication and Info For You
January 23rd, 2010Both women and men can get the disease, but women are 100 times more likely to get it than men. While you can’t guarantee the prevention of breast cancer by exercising, eating healthily, and being aware of changes in your body, such actions that are normally attributed to a healthy lifestyle can greatly reduce the risk of breast cancer. Also, it is the fifth leading cause of death by cancer in women worldwide. These breast cancer statistics are certainly sobering, but they help us put the problem into a perspective that translates to a dire need for women to take preventative steps throughout their lives, not just when they become candidates for mammography around age 40.
At minimum, women should be performing self-breast examinations once a month and getting breast health exams from their physicians at least once annually. Self-examinations are key. Monthly self-exams for pre-menopausal women should be done several days after menstruation to get the most accurate results. Menopausal women should perform their self-exams on the same day of each month.
Genetics and environmental factors certainly play a part in the development of breast cancer, but even if you have no incidence of it in your family, you shouldn’t rely on genetic luck alone to keep you in the clear. Living healthily is a major key to breast cancer prevention. Alcohol, for instance, should be used in moderation and use of tobacco should be limited, if not cut out altogether. We’ve already mentioned healthy eating, exercise, and self-breast exams, but there are also behaviors that put us at risk that are well within our abilities to control. Both of these behaviors have been linked to higher incidence of breast cancer in women, not to mention all the other health problems that can arise. Overweight and obese women are also at greater risk, especially if the weight was gained post-menopause.
Next time you’re with a group of friends, in a mall or on a crowded street, remember this: 1 in 8 women born in the U.S. will get breast cancer. While some of us are more at risk than others, either due to genetics, environmental factors, lifestyle choices or a combination thereof, none of us are immune or invincible. This alone is good enough reason to become more aware and to spread that awareness to everyone you know.
There is no known breast cancer medication or “cure” as of yet, but a great deal of scientific energy is being channeled toward that end. Thankfully, there are numerous research foundations, societies and organizations large and small wholeheartedly dedicated to this fight. The battle for each of us as individuals, however, begins at home. Whether we have been diagnosed with breast cancer or not, we can all play a part in spreading awareness and valuable breast cancer info. Prevention and early detection are the best assurances we have. And sometimes, no matter what we do to reduce our risk, we still end up on the front lines among the 12.7% of women in the United States who will develop the disease at some point during their lives.

How to Build a Toy Kitchen
December 23rd, 2009Young children have great fun engaging in pretend play. If they are 3 at least 3 years old you may wish to get them a toy kitchen. There are many specialist manufacturers of toy kitchens however if you wish to give it a personal touch you may wish to build one yourself.
Equipment List:
6 x panels of 3/8 inch thick, 24 inch by 18 inch plywood
8 x panels of 3/8 inch thick, 24 inch by 12 inch plywood
10 x panels of 3/8 inch thick, 18 inch by 12 inch plywood
4 x panels of 3/8 inch thick, 17 1/4 inch by 11 1/4 inch plywood
1 box 3/4 inch long sheetrock screws
1 box 3/4 inch long finishing nails
3 x 24 inch long piano hinges
4 x small cabinet door butt hinges
2 x 6 inch long grab style metal finish patio door handles
2 cabinet door knobs
2 x 1/2 inch diameter j-hook bolts
2 x 6 inch diameter metal salad bowls with 1/2 inch lip edge Clear silicone sealant
Belt sander (w/ Coarse, medium, fine and extra fine sanding belts)
Power drill with 1/2 inch bit
Jigsaw Circular saw
Compass #2 pencil 4 sheets black felt
5 oven knobs 16 plastic L-shaped wall mounts Instant adhesive Nontoxic paint in desired color Clear acrylic deck coating
You will find that plywood is the most versatile and inexpensive alternative to hardwood and it will look great when sanded smoothed and sealed with a few coats of clear acrylic. It is also easily cut into any shape with a jigsaw, making it simple to disassemble and store where necessary. The appliances in this kitchen will al be 18x24x12 inches.
Buy your plywood ready cut or cur from 4×8 ft sheets of 3/8 inch thick plywood (unfinished). You should sand all of the pieces down with a coarse/fine sanding belt but leave the extra fine sanding until the end. Next paint all the pieces with the desired colour and leave them to dry for 24 hours.
Assemble the basic boxes for each 18x24x12 inch appliance, leaving the front panel off. The fridge and storage cupboard will stand on the short end, with the sink and stove lying on the long side. Nail the box sides together and make sure that the corners are squared.
Take the four pieces of 17 1/4 by 11 1/4 inch wood and attach 2 wall mounts along the short sides one inch from either end. These will be the shelves for the fridge and the cupboard. Decide on the position for each shelf and attach them with 3/4 inch sheetrock screws.
Take a piano hinge and fold it along it’s spine. Temporarily tack it in place alongside the left or right of the front of the fridge, depending on how you want it to open. Again, use 3/4 inch screws to attach the hinge. Open and close the door and adjust the hinge placement if necessary.
Attach the 12×18 inch doors to the sink using the 3/4 inch screws and some cabinet butt hinges. Scribe two 6 inch diameter circles on the top of the sink side by side. Make a pilot hole in the centre using a power drill. Cut out the circles using a jigsaw blade. Sand the edges to remove any buurs that you may have created.
Lay a bead of silicion seal around each circle’s edge and place a salad bowl in each hole. Press down to ensure a good seal. Wipe any areas where the seal may have smeared then allow to dry overnight. You should then drill a 1/2 inch hole near the edge of each bowl and insert a j-hook bolt upside down in order to replicate a tap.
Finally, attach all the remaining door knobs, handles and oven knobs. Sand all sharp corners with extra fine sandpaper to bevel the edges.

Kids Christmas Gift Ideas
December 16th, 2009Most children are really very easy to shop for. Between the ages of 6-10, kids tend to still be into toys such as dolls and cars. During this particular age range they may also enjoy learning toys such as video games that improve their counting. With christmas looming, here are some additional christmas gift ideas in case you are really struggling with the christmas shopping.
Children always enjoy watching a good kids movie or TV show every now and then. Obviously what you deem suitable for your children is up to your own discretion and judgement. Some TV shows that are popular at the moment include “Yo Gabba Gabba”, “Thomas the Tank Engine” and “Dora the Explorer”. It shouldn’t be too difficult to find these shows on DVD in shops or online. It may be wise for shop for alternative gifts as it usually doesn’t take long for films to appear on television and in any case christmas programming always caters heavily for children so there will be no shortage of shows for them to watch.
Boys of this age tend to be interested in toys like ride on cars or tricks, art kits, remote control vehicles. Girls will tend to be more interested in dolls, doll clothes, colouring boos, art supplies or maybe toy kitchen sets. If you are looking for some more edicational gift ideas then there are plenty of science toys on the market that manage to make learning fun, interactive and in some cases – messy. A basic telescope could provide an interesting night time toy or there’s always the old favourite – a chemistry set. Just make sure that you accompany your child to prevent any spillages or accidents. Lego is always a popular toy and understandably so. It allows your child to be both creative and constructive and should give them hours of enjoyment.
Video games are always a good gift idea. It used to be the case that parents got concerned that their children were spending too much time playing games, however these days games consoles have become that much more sophisticated that children will be entertained with a much more engaging experience and with consoles such as the Wii they can even benefit from a more physical form of play. Do bear in mind that the games consoles themselves can be quite expensive, but it’s a gift that is guaranteed not to disappoint.
Food can always be an interesting alternative gift or christmas treat. Perhaps you could try baking them a cake, home made cookies or even home made sweets. It can be even more fun if you get them to help you make it. Obviously you should take any food allergies into account when preparing to bake or cook anything.
If you decide to buy clothes for your child then do take size, current weather conditions and current styles into account. It is always better to get clothes that are slightly too big so that they can grow into them. It can be the case that children wont get too excited about receiving clothes so why not include a small toy or some other treat to decrease the chances of dissapointment.

Sharing More Joy – Shopping For Your New Grandchild
November 22nd, 2009I am finally able to say the words I have known I was destined to say, my baby is going to have a baby. She is expecting her first child at thirty nine years old. I can barely remember this much excitement, and am looking forward to this grandchild as much as I anticipated my own daughter! It is indeed a joyous time, but I find myself perplexed. I haven’t dealt with babies in decades. The stereotypical baby care activities of our day such as sterilizing glass bottles in boiling water or endless wash loads of cloth diapers are practically non-existent now. Diapers are disposable now, bottles can be washed in the dishwasher, and there are many items designed to help stimulate baby’s mental and emotional development. At first blush, it seems I was completely unfamiliar with the “normal” items used today, so I went out to search for an appropriate gift for my first grandbaby.
To my relief, I found that things are not as unfamiliar as I had expected. What I discovered were many items I wished had been available when I was raising my daughter as well as many items to which I could relate. Many mothers today are going back to cloth diapers, which are so much different than the older style cloth I had used with my daughter! For example, one such item is the Fuzzi Bunz diapers. Fuzzi Bunz cloth diapers incorporate many of the conveniences of disposable diapers while removing most of the drawbacks. The so-called safety pins of the past have been replaced by adjustable elastic and securely fastening snaps, while the fleece lining helps drastically reduce diaper rash. Cloth diapers are friendly to the environment in that they help reduce the amount of waste cluttering landfills. I think this will make a great gift for my daughter and her baby.
I found another intriguing gift idea made a company called Ellaroo. They offer a lovely baby wrap-style carrier. I remember the bulky, complicated type of baby carriers, but this is certainly not one of those. It is a handy cloth wrap that allows the mother to carry the baby hands-free close to her body, where it makes sense. Similar to the wraps are ring slings, which also offer a nurturing and sensible way to carry your baby with you.
One more relative newcomer that I discovered is an item called a baby travel system. This item combines a stroller, car seat, sometimes a removable bassinet for an infant, and more all into one convenient product. The components of these systems fit together or come apart to suit different needs. Most are collapsible and light-weight, with many useful features including plenty of pockets, convenient extra handles, straps and sun shades.
Now that I have seen some of the amazing products on the market for new parents, not only am I no longer intimidated by choosing a gift for my daughter and her baby, I can’t wait to see what else is out there!

Baby’s First Overnight Visit With Grandma
November 16th, 2009Letting grandma care for my baby for an overnight visit was intended to provide me rest. I had never been away from my daughter for any length of time in her short four month old lifetime. Since my mother had been asking for over a month to keep my baby for an overnight visit, I could not put it off any longer. Preparing everything to get her to grandma’s house made me feel like I needed a vacation. Add to all that the stress of being away from my baby for the first time.
Mother had already purchased some baby items to keep are her home, but she did not have everything necessary for an overnight stay. My mind started going over the possibilities. If she needed to go anywhere, the baby travel system with the car seat and the seat base was a necessity. To be useful, it would need to be installed in her car. I knew that she was not planning to go anywhere, but you never know what might come up. The stroller, car seat and base made their way into my vehicle.
My baby rarely falls asleep in he crib, so even though my mom has a play pen which could be used as a crib we did not need it. I usually have to put her in one of my ring slings and wear her around the house until she falls asleep. After she has fallen asleep, I carefully move her to her crib. I brought along one of my ring slings and planned on showing my mother how to use it.
It was our plan to use cloth diapers for our little one. Cloth diapers were used with my older siblings but I was a disposable diaper baby. She thought my decision was like going backwards. my mother had a hard time understanding how much cloth diapers had improved since her days of diapering me. To show her how simple they were to use, I was going to bring along my Fuzzi Bunz cloth diapers. So, in addition to everything else I packed a few cloth diapers and a wet bag and planned to show my mom how to use them.
By the time I was done packing my mini van I needed a rest, but it was time to leave. My mother and I spent over two hours going over everything after heading to her home. When she asked me if I thought she had ever taken care of a baby, I realized it was time to leave. I had taken everything I could to make the overnight visit easy on my daughter and on my mom. I then went back home to prepare for my dinner date with my husband. The dinner was stressful, as I could not stop thinking about my little girl and I called my mom about ten times in just the first two hours. All the worry was for nothing; the visit went very well. My mother had a wonderful time taking care of a little one once again while my daughter slept through the entire night for the first time.

How to Find Which Infant Carrier is Your Best Choice
November 4th, 2009Several pediatric studies have found that wearing your baby offers important benefits to your baby’s mental, emotional, and physical development. Parents can realize the best possible developmental benefits for their children using any type of baby carrier. Selecting a baby carrier can be a daunting task for many parents. Depending upon your body type and your personal requirements, the best type of baby carrier for you will be different than for other families.
The pouch sling is a traditional type of baby carrier. Draping over one shoulder, this type of baby carrier holds baby in the fabric carrier. A popular brand of sling is HotSlings. Slings offer the benefit of newborn use – making them a great choice for expecting parents. Additionally, slings tend to work well with particular body types and are not adjustable, making it difficult or not possible for sharing between parents or use if your body does not return to it’s prepregnancy shape. Also, some parents find that one shoulder bearing all the weight is uncomfortable.
A variation of the traditional sling is a ring sling. Ring slings provide you an adjustable alternative to the traditional pouch sling as well as a great choice for those who want to share between parents of very different sizes. It’s also a very popular option for plus size moms.
An alternative to traditional or ring-style slings are baby wrap carriers, or wraps. Versatile but challenging, the wrap style baby carrier is an excellent option for parents. A popular brand of wraps is the Ellaroo. The wrap is essentially a large, rectangular piece of cloth that you would wrap around yourself in a way that supports your baby. The baby wrap can be tied in a wide variety of ways which makes it the most versatile carrier to use but can be the most daunting to parents.
An emerging carrier on the market which originated in China is the mei tai. A mei tai carrier is a rectangular piece of cloth with parallel straps emerging from each corner. The baby is held against your chest, back or side using the rectangular cloth while the straps criss-cross behind you and wrap back around below your baby’s bottom or on the back to secure the baby. Mei tai’s can hold newborns up to toddlers, and because the straps can be made at any length is great for sharing and for plus size moms.
And do not forget the most commonly used baby carriers found today. These are almost like backpacks that you strap to your front or back and your baby sits in it like a seat. Popular brands include Baby Bjorn, Ergo and Eddie Bauer. These types of carriers are preferred by active parents who like to take their children on long walks or hiking. This carrier keeps your baby securely held in place while offering the parent a lot of mobility.
No matter which baby carrier you prefer, baby wearing provides both you and your baby many benefits. When you wear your baby it is easier to care for your other children. You no longer need to worry about the constraints of large strollers. The relationship and bond you have with your child can be strengthened and encouraged by wearing him close to you during your day to day tasks.

Toddler Girl Clothing Must Be Durable and Comfortable
October 30th, 2009It was appropriate and fun dressing your baby girl in frills and fancy little dresses. Unfortunately this is not very practical when your baby reaches the toddler stage. Now you should be thinking of functional clothing. Clothing that will allow your little girl the freedom to crawl, learn to walk and eventually climb, run and tumble. Toddler clothes should be easy to get on and off as during this stage not only will most little girls go through the potty training phase, they will also start wanting to dress themselves.
Toddler girl clothing must be comfortable and durable. You should be able to relax and let your toddler girl explore things without the stress of fancy clothes that cost a fortune and must be kept clean and tidy at all costs. This exploration stage is an important learning phase during which your little girl needs to develop a lot of skills that will stand her in good stead throughout her childhood. During the toddler years your little girl will learn to feed herself, dress herself and help herself with a toilet routine. You are going to need clothes that will help her to master these skills and stand up to all the spoils. It is recommended that all her clothing should be machine washable and winter clothes should preferably be suitable for tumble drying.
It is a given that your little girl will have a party dress or two. If your little girl looks particularly sweet in pastel colors limit these to the party outfits. Choose practical colors for play wear for your little girl. Patterned fabric tends not to show up the odd mark or two whereas stains are almost accentuated on solid color garments. When selecting solid color garments bright reds, greens and blues are more practical than the softer hues. Pastel colors in sleep wear should be fine as most toddlers fall asleep shortly after bath time and therefore these clothes are usually not subjected to the same amount of wear and tear as day clothes.
When it comes to sizing make sure that you buy the correct size. Buying to last more than one season is just not worth it. Over-sized clothing never looks good on a toddler and inhibits play. There is no guarantee either that the clothing will fit properly when the next season comes round. Buying toddler clothing that is made with a stretch fabric makes more sense. This means that clothing that fit snugly will stretch as your toddler grows and most of this clothing will fit your little girl for an entire season.
If you are planning on potty training your little girl during the season make sure that all clothing can be put on and more importantly taken off quickly and with ease. Avoid one-piece clothing that buttons at the crotch during the potty training period. Look for pants with elasticized waists as this will make potty training easier for both you and your little girl.
As you approach the age when your little girl will want to dress herself make sure that you choose clothing that will make this easier for her to master. It is a big challenge for little hands and small things can make a big difference as to how well they cope. Shoes with velcro fastening instead of laces, necklines with rib knits that slip over the little heads easily and as mentioned before pants with elastic in the waist can all make dressing much more fun and less of a battle.

Tips on Removing Stains From Your Little Girls Clothes
October 24th, 2009Learning To Eat
During the toddler stage, your little girls clothes are going to have to endure more spills and spoils than any other phase of her life. You will have to sit back and watch as she feeds her clothes more than her mouth, wipes her grubby little fingers on her new clothes and then more than likely gets the last bit of mush all over your clothing. That’s just while teaching herself to eat. Almost all food stains are however easy to clean as long as you act promptly. The important thing to remember is that stains will become embedded in the fibers of the fabric if the stain is not attended to before it sets.
It is advisable to always check the garment for color fastness before attempting to remove any stains. Try the stain removal procedure on an inconspicuous area of the clothing to test for color fading before applying to the stain. Follow wash instructions on labels of garments and most importantly never apply heat to a stain as this will reduce your chances of removing the stain. Take care not to tumble dry or iron your little girl’s clothes before the stain has been removed completely as this will allow the stain to set permanently making it almost impossible to remove the stain.
* Tomato-based stains
Children love tomato dishes, especially spaghetti bolognaise but unfortunately as this has a tomato base it does tend to stain little girl’s clothes. You can remove fresh tomato stains by applying a small amount of dish soap to the stain and then gently rubbing both sides of the fabric together. Rinse the soap out with cold water and repeat if necessary. Once the stain has been removed wash the clothing as usual and air dry. Only tumble dry clothing once you are certain that the stain has been removed as heat will set the stain.
If the tomato stain has dried on your toddler girl clothing then wet the stained area with cold water and gently rubbing dishwasher detergent into the stain. Next rub over the stained area with an ice cube and then blot the area with a clean cloth moistened with vinegar. Once the stain has been removed wash as usual and air dry.
* Juice Stains
If your little girl messes juice on her clothes try to clean the stain immediately. If this is not possible and the stain dries then rub glycerin on the stain before starting with the treatment of the stain. Make a cleaning solution by mixing one part vinegar to three parts water or alternatively add a quarter cup of baking soda to two cups of cold water. Blot the soiled are with a clean cloth. Do not rub as this will cause the stain to spread. Work from the outside of the stain towards the center. Once all the excess juice has been removed moisten a clean white cloth with the cleaning solution and blot it onto the stain. Repeat the process with the cleaning solution, using a clean cloth with each blotting episode until the stain has been removed. Wash the clothing in cold water and air dry making sure that the stain does not re-appear when the clothing is dry. Do not tumble dry any soiled clothing before you are satisfied that the stain has been removed as the heat from the dryer will set the stain and removal will be almost impossible.
By the age of three most little girls are potty trained and have advanced to wearing dainty little panties. Its getting there that your toddler girl clothing is going to take the beating. Potty training can, and often is, a longer process than what we anticipate. There are going to be the odd accidents and her clothes are going to be soiled. By this stage you have probably found a stain removing solution that works best for these particular stains.
Learning to walk
The other big hurdle that your little girl will be faced with is teaching herself to walk. This is no mean feat for your little girl who has so far spent her life relying on others to get her where she wants to be. Now soon she will be able to walk, climb and before you know it she will be tumbling and inevitably falling. Unfortunately this will bring its fair share of stains to your little girls clothes.
* Mud stains
Always allow mud to dry before treating the stain. Never try to wipe wet mud off clothing as this will only spread the stain. Once the mud has dried completely gently scrape off the excess dirt with a plastic knife or spoon. Gently brush the dry stain with a small brush or old toothbrush. Place a drop or two of liquid dish soap onto the stain once all the excess dirt has been removed and with your thumb and forefinger gently rub the soap into the stain. Now add a few drops of water and using circular motions briskly brush both sides of the fabric. If the stain is not be removed with your first attempt repeat the process or alternatively apply a spot remover. Once the stain has been removed the garment can be washed in the normal way. Always make sure that the stain has been completely removed before placing clothes in a dryer or ironing the clothes.
If you find that any of the above remedies has failed to remove the stain completely then the stain should be pretreated with a spot remover prior to washing the garment in the washing machine. It may be necessary to repeat the spot removing process before the stain is removed completely.
