Sports Nutrition For Your Active Teen

    April 22nd, 2010

Sports nutrition is a very important factor that highly determines the progress of a teenage athlete in his/her favorite sport. Although the science of sports nutrition is highly complicated and involves numerous variable schools, there are some basic tips and guidelines, which if followed, can improve the fitness and strength of your active teenager.

Eating a balanced diet is the most important sports nutrition tip. Nutrients are divided into 4 broad groups; the group of carbohydrates and fats, the proteins’ group, the dairy products’ group and the group of minerals and vitamins. Each meal must include at least one food type from each group.

Carbohydrates and fats are the major source of energy for the body during exercise and should comprise at least 33% of the diet of the teen athlete. Proteins, especially of animal sources, are important for building stronger muscle fibers. The proportion of proteins in the diet of an athletic teenager is highly determined by the type of sport practiced; for example, body builders and boxers usually need more proteins in their diets than soccer players and bicyclers. Dairy products, vegetables and fruits are rich sources of minerals and vitamins. Numerous minerals and vitamins are important sports nutrition elements that act as co-factors in the synthesis of stronger muscle fibers (positive nitrogen balance).

Sports nutrition experts have emphasized the crucial role of the pre-exercise meal in predicting the outcome of an exercise session. The nature of the pre-exercise meal should depend on the style of exercise of your teenager; if he/she prefers to exercise in the evenings, lunch should consist of easily digestible food types with a high content of complex carbohydrates such as bread, vegetables, fruits, chocolate and cereals. A medium sized bowel of salad with 2 small pieces of meat is a good pre-exercise meal for evening exercise sessions. On the other hand, if your teenage child exercises first thing in the morning, breakfast should be light; an egg, a fruit and toast is convenient in most cases.

Sports nutrition researches have shown that eating a snack half an hour before the exercise session triggers elevation of blood glucose to prepare the body for the high energy consuming physical actions. A chocolate bar, a large banana or an energy drink is usually appropriate in most cases. Teenage athletes are also advised to consume more water during the 30 minutes that precede the exercise routine. This is essential to prevent dehydration as during exercise large amount of water is lost from the body through sweating and respiration.

Sports nutrition researchers have long been focusing on the role of the post-exercise meal in affecting the muscular growth and the built up stamina. Carbohydrates are important to refill the muscular fuel stores (glycogen), while proteins are essential for healing of the muscle fibers. The post-exercise meal should be eaten 2 hours after the exercise session. When preparing a post-exercise meal for your teenage child, try to stick to a carbohydrate to protein ratio of 4 to 1.

These were the basic sports nutrition guidelines that would maximize the strength and stamina of your child.

Home Care is the Way of the Future For Seniors

    February 10th, 2010

It seems that more area locals are finding that “aging in place” leads not only to longer lives in many cases, but also to a better quality of life. The sick and aging residents of the North Carolina Piedmont are showing a tendency to skip long-term hospital and nursing home stays, opting instead for a lifestyle that’s much more conducive to personal freedom and dignity: home care. Durham, NC, as accessible as it is to all of the Duke Medical facilities, is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to geriatrics.

Medical professionals and laymen alike are discovering that senior care, Clayton NC or Clayton CA, when performed in an environment where the patient is comfortable and familiar (the primary example being their home), leads to a better state of well-being in the golden years of their life. This trend isn’t just showing up in central North Carolina – it’s happening all over the United States.

More than 1.4 million seniors are currently using home care, and that number is expected to double by 2030 as the senior population continues to skyrocket. Senior care is not just an area of health care, it is also a business, and many people view it as such. As with any aspect of the marketplace, demand yields supply, and therefore as the Baby Boom generation continues to age, nonprofit organizations and entrepreneurs alike are jumping on the opportunity to develop senior care services and products. Many of these developments, you can bet, are going to be geared toward “aging in place” as that continues to become the next big thing in caring for sick and aging seniors.

The range of home care services that are available, no matter where you live, is quite extensive and can be custom-tailored to the needs of the patient. Whether they require round-the-clock nursing care or they just need someone to help them run errands and do things around the house (known as non-medical or custodial care), there are very few services you can’t find under the growing umbrella of home care. Clayton NC may not have as many options as, say, Chicago, but the fact that it is proximal to such a medically-driven city as Durham, right there in the NC Research Triangle, you can bet that even Clayton seniors can find exactly what they need in terms of at-home senior care.

In addition to home care, families across the nation can expect to see a rise in the following trends in senior care services over the next few decades: for-profit social workers and other senior advocates; nonprofit peer care, such as Seniors Helping Seniors; luxury care products such as gold-plated canes and leather lift chairs; senior fitness programs; senior transportation; “elder gadgets” like bionic gloves and disposable hearing aids; GPS – enabled electronic alert devices; “granny cams” and other monitoring devices; and finally, senior-driven legal services (also known as “elder law”).

As you can see, the senior care paradigm of the future extends far beyond home care, but many of these emerging products and services will support an elderly population who prefers freedom, enhancing their ability to live more independently within their communities.

Sweet 16 Birthday Party Ideas For Guys

    January 10th, 2010

When you think of Sweet 16, the mind automatically goes to thoughts of teenage girls, perhaps the color pink, and lots of giggles and good times. Well, what about the poor guys who are turning 16, don’t they count too? They need to be honored for achieving that milestone and celebrate in a special way.

There is something about turning 16 that moves them from being a “kid” to now being a young man. In fact, guys probably look forward to being 16 moreso than girls as they are now allowed to obtain the all-coveted drivers license, which spells F-R-E-E-D-O-M!

First of all, when you think about planning a “Sweet 16″ party for your special guy, you want to think of manly-man decorations. Forget about all of the cutesy, girlie decor. Everything must shout G-U-Y! Here are a few party themes that are perfect for a Sweet 16 Birthday party, guy style, to get your creative juices flowing:

Sweet 16 Rock N’ Roll Party – If possible, rent a room with a dance floor to host the party. If that is a little over the top for your budget, then be sure to hold the party at a house that will accommodate all of your guests comfortably, along with insuring the noise level won’t be an issue as the night wears on. If you are able to hire a professional DJ to keep the music flowing, along with maintaining a lively atmosphere, this would be the perfect addition. As an alternative, if you can hire a band that would be even better. Decorate with strobe lights and colorful disco balls. Cover the tables with black, brown, or navy tablecloths. You can make some signs to hang on the walls that say the names of various rock n’ roll bands and hang some band posters.

Sweet 16 Beach Party – Erect some canopies, add plenty of beach chairs, and be sure to bring the necessary B-B-Q. Also, don’t forget to have a sufficient number of towels and sunscreen. Bring plenty of munchies, hot dogs, and burgers. Of course, a beach party isn’t complete without a volleyball game, so be sure to bring the necessary gear. Also, have some frisbees on hand because they are another must-have beach gear. Have an old-fashioned campfire and roast marshmallows.

Sweet 16 Sports Party – You can either focus on your teen’s favorite sport and center the party around that theme or let it be a general sports theme. They can play a game of basketball, football, soccer, etc. Afterwards, have a B-B-Q and just let them hang out.

Sweet 16 Action Party – Take them to a laser tag or paint ball facility and let them cut loose. Guys love playing these high-tech versions of an old-fashioned game of tag. Afterwards, let them eat pizza and re-live their laser tag and paint ball adventures. If they are wanting to little more bonding time, you might consider renting an action-packed movie.

The bottom line, is to remember that your soon-to-be 16-year-old son would love to have a Sweet 16 birthday party–guy style!

Construct Some Fun Construction Birthday Party Activities

    December 28th, 2009

Whether your guests are doing construction birthday party activities or games, a Bob the Builder or construction zone party is sure to please your little workers. This is a super easy party to put together, as many of the activities just naturally fall into place.

Dirt Mover Relay – Split the kids into teams and give each team a bucket, shovel, and a pile of dirt. Put all the buckets at the finish line. Each player will take a shovel full of dirt from their dirt pile and walk or run it to their bucket and dump it in. Then they must run back to their teammates and hand-over the shovel to the next person in line. The game continues until one team has completely moved their dirt pile into the bucket.

Pin The Tools On Bob – This game is played like Pin the Tail on the Donkey except you use a poster of Bob the Builder and create tools out of poster board or cardstock. using double-stick tape, the kids try to pin the tools on Bob the Builder’s tool belt while blindfolded.

Digging For Trucks & Tools – Bury small plastic trucks and tools in a large mound of dirt. Give each of the kids a shovel and let them have at it! The object is to try and unearth the most tools.

Block Building – Prior to the party, prepare various sized empty cardboard boxes by taping them closed and painting them in various colors. Split the kids into teams and give each team the same number and size of boxes. The object of the game is to be the first team to build a tower using all of their boxes within the designated time. If the boxes start to fall, the team members may try to rebuild their tower as long as time permits.

Musical Trucks – This game is played like “Musical Chairs.” Decorate cardboard boxes to look like trucks. You will need to have as many boxes as you do kids. The boxes should be large enough for the kids to either sit or stand in. As the music plays, the kids walk around the “trucks.” When the music stops, the kids try to climb into a “truck”. Each time the music stops, remove one more “truck.” Whoever is the last person left in the game is the winner.

Construction Zone Obstacle Course – This game is only an option if you have sufficient space to create an obstacle course. Set-up various piles of dirt for the kids to go over, use caution tape to rope off a maze of walkways, orange cones for them to walk around, tires to step through, stepping stones to walk upon, etc.

These are just a few ideas to help you throw a fun and successful construction birthday party or Bob the Builder party. Lay a proper foundation with fun invitations, construct appropriate theme decorations, then build the thrill of it all into the party with exciting theme-related games and activities.

Blueprints For Construction Birthday Party Activities

    December 28th, 2009

A construction birthday party or a Bob the Builder party won’t be complete for your dump-truck lovin’ boy unless you plan some construction-related activities. Put on your hard hat, aka your thinking cap, and get ready to plan some dynamite activities!

Dirt Play – If you have room, truck in a load of dirt or use an existing pile of dirt for your construction crew. Provide various toy dump trucks, excavators, shovels, buckets, etc.

Building – Gather large appliance boxes and have the kids work together to create one large structure or several “buildings.” Have helpers available to assist them in duct taping their structures. They can then paint and decorate them.

Construction Tool Relay – This game is best for kids who are at least 5-6 years old. Split the kids into teams and give each team an empty tool belt. Place a hard hat, safety goggles, work gloves, and plastic tools at the finish line, e.g., hammer, wrench, screwdriver, pliers, etc. There should be one set of these items for each team.

The object of the game is for the first player of each team to put on the empty tool belt, run to the finish line, and fill the belt up with tools, put on the goggles, hard hat, and gloves, and run back to their teammates. Then that person must remove the filled tool belt, goggles, hard hat, and gloves and hand them to their next teammate. That person puts everything on and runs back to the finish line, where that person will remove the tools from the belt, take off the hard hat, goggles, and gloves, and run back to their team and hand-off the empty tool belt to the next person in line on their team. The first team to get through all of their teammates is the winner.

Wrap ‘Em Up – Separate the kids into teams and give each team a roll of caution tape. On “Go”, one person on each team will be mummified by their teammates. The first team to completely cover someone, excluding the head, with the caution tape is the winner.

Wheelbarrow Relay – Split the kids into teams and give them each a child-size wheelbarrow. On “Go”, the first person on each team pushes the wheelbarrow to the finish line and back to their teammates. The play continues until all the members of one team has had a turn, thus they are the winner.

Pass The Hammer – This game is played like “Pass the Parcel.” Have all the kids sit in a circle and pass around a small “toolbox” filled with candy as music plays. When the music stops, whoever is holding the toolbox shall pick a candy out and sit the rest of the game out. Play continues until everyone has received a candy and the ultimate winner is the last person left in the game who ultimately wins the toolbox of remaining candy.

Remember, when you have gathered a group of youngsters to celebrate a construction birthday party or a Bob the Builder party, you may expect them to be full of energy and want to build, dig, and get dirty. Therefore, plan your party foundation accordingly and construct a few activities to help burn off their excess energy.

How to Make Spectacular Birthday Party Invitations

    December 25th, 2009

Since birthday party invitations are the first hint of a party on the horizon, you will want to be sure to do them right the first time. They can help you set the tone of your party, establish the theme, and cause your guests to anxiously look forward to your upcoming event with excitement and anticipation. However, a boring, hum-drum invitation may conversely cause a person to say to themselves, “Oh, (name) is having a party. Maybe I’ll go if I’m not doing anything else.” With careful planning you can make sure that your invites insure that your guests will be scrambling to RSVP and arrive with anxious anticipation of having a great time!

BIRTHDAY PARTY INVITATIONS – GUEST LIST

When considering how many guests to invite for a child’s birthday party, the general rule of thumb is to invite the same number of kids as the age of the birthday child. For example, if your child is turning 7, then you would want to invite 7 friends. However, if you are able to lasso enough helpers, you may certainly expand the number of guests. Afterall, the more the merrier, as long as you have control. A great ratio of helpers to young guests would be 1 to 4. A good ratio is 1 to 5, and a maximum ratio would be 1 to 6.

BIRTHDAY PARTY INVITATIONS – PARTY PARTICULARS

Although we all know what should go on an invitation, the following is provided just as a gentle reminder, because many an invitation has been sent out with information missing. When this occurs, it causes everyone to call you, or you have to resend the invites, or you have to send out supplemental or revised info, all of which may cause confusion and could end badly with possible misunderstandings. Obviously, all of this can easily be avoided with careful planning. First of all, be sure to convey to your guests the party theme, the name of the birthday child, the age the child will be turning, the date and time of the party, the party’s location, along with directions if necessary, and appropriate RSVP contact info should include name and phone number or email address.

BIRTHDAY PARTY INVITATIONS – SPECIAL PARTY PARTICULARS

If you are hosting a special party which requires a costume, glam attire, beachwear, luau etc. Be sure everyone clearly understands how they should dress.

If it is to be a surprise party, be sure everyone understands to keep their yap shut and not spill the beans to the birthday person.

If it is a slumber party, remind guests to bring PJ’s and a change of clothes for the next day.

If it is a beach party, be sure they are reminded to bring swimsuits, towel, sunscreen, sweatshirt for evening, change of clothes, etc.

If the party involves anything that requires parent approval or signing off on liability forms, e.g, going to a paintball facility, be sure to take care of this ahead of time so no one is left out.

    BIRTHDAY PARTY IDEAS – R.S.V.P.

Be sure to include a phone number, email address, and the name of the individual to contact, along with the date that you want to receive the RSVP response by.

Experience Gifts: Giving a Memory Not a Product

    November 29th, 2009

It’s always nice to give someone some sort of product to let them know you care, but sometimes it’s better to give them something they’ll actually remember. Of course, you can give them that product if you wish, but in addition to that, did you ever consider taking your friends or family somewhere to have some fun? Here are a few fun ideas that you can put to use on a holiday season when you want something a little more memorable.

Ski Trips-These are always quite fun, and many people enjoy taking ski trips. These are the times when all of the stress will vanish from an individual’s life, and they will simply get to have fun and forget who they are for a few moments. This is truly something that the entire family can enjoy, especially the young ones.

For those who don’t know how to ski, there are usually ski lessons available at these locations. These lessons are oriented for individuals of almost any age, so you don’t need to worry about that. If you are well versed in the art of skiing or snowboarding, then you can just relax and have a great time with friends, family, or that special someone.

Skating Rinks-The idea might be a little outdated, but that doesn’t make it any less fun! Take your friends or that special someone to either a roller rink, or an ice skating rink. If you are taking your significant other, then you will be glad to know that many roller skating rinks have couples nights in which both of you can participate. There will be even be romantic songs playing, as well as one on one skating sessions.

Adventure Days – If you want to do something that will get the adrenaline pumping, why not choose an action packed day out for somebody. There are all kinds of events available, from tanks to supercars you can drive your friends and family crazy with a track day. Then there’s more sedate things such as glider flight training or horse riding to suit those of a more gentile nature. There literally are hundreds of options available to you, so get out and have a look around for that extra special day out for someone you care for.

Amusement Parks-There’s nothing quite like a good amusement park, as many people will tend to agree. Taking your family to one of these rather than giving them a present will make them rather happy. You should give it a thought and look into some of the amusement parks either in your areas, or in other countries.

Giving an experience rather than a gift can be very rewarding and is not something to be dismissed. If this sounds like something your family would enjoy, then make sure that you explore all of the possibilities. Chances are you will create a memorable experience, one that will not be easily forgotten. If you can’t decide where to go, consult with your family on possible locations to visit. They might have some great ideas you never thought of, which is exactly why this is a great family activity. So give it a try, and have fun with it!

This Year’s Must Have Christmas Gifts

    November 29th, 2009

Christmas is a great time of year. Many manufacturers choose to release their newest products at Christmas simply because they know people are going to buy them. This also means you’re going to need to plan ahead by reading fliers, getting caught up on the latest technology, and most importantly reading this article so that you can get up to date on the best technology gifts this year. They’ve certainly changed quite a bit from last year.

Music Players-We’ve always had the portable music players; everyone remembers the Walkmans. Of course, now they’ve developed into something different entirely. Instead of having a walkman, now have a sleek compact iPod. It started with the original iPod, then to the iPod shuffle, and now we are at the iPod touch, which some have called the ‘true personal computer’ because of its online capabilities and gaming applications.

There are many other music players out there, though they aren’t all quite as popular as the iPod touch, nor are they as functional. If the person you are buying for simply wants something to listen to music to with however, a Zune or one of the many Sony music players will come in handy.

Laptops-The need for personal computers has become great these days, especially with the number of computer related courses as colleges and universities. The question is what type of laptop to get. Fortunately, laptops are not quite as expensive as they once were. In fact, you can end up getting a decent laptop for a relatively low cost, but now there are Netbooks. These are much like laptops, but they generally do not feature an optical drive. They are made for a sole purpose, as their name indicates, and that purpose is Internet. This makes them quite nice for students who ‘just need to get online’, or it’s great for individuals who don’t want all the headaches of the standard computer, though do want to check their e-mail now and then.

Books-These might not be quite as popular as they once were, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t going to be people that don’t enjoy a good read! As you know, teen books have become popular once again, especially with the Twilight series, which followed on directly from the monumentally successful Harry Potter. Books are an inexpensive way to let someone know that you care, so what’s stopping you?

E-Book Readers-The idea of ebooks has become much more popular as of late. People like the idea of being able to read on the go, as well as the idea of being able to have an entire library of books in one single device. With the introduction of Amazon’s Kindle, it’s become clear the electronic books are here to stay, especially with the downloadable content and 3G connection to Amazon’s server.

These are a few of the best gifts for this year. As it nears Christmas time, more choices will become evident. After all, no one knows what Apple is cooking up. So check out the local advertisements, look online, and you never know what you might find.

5 Great Ways to Make a Baby’s Nursery More Stimulating

    November 11th, 2009

A baby’s mind is constantly developing and absorbing things from its environment like a sponge. You’ll want to make sure a child’s nursery is a space that engages their mind and senses, and encourages their learning. Speak to your Seattle interior designer about these five great ideas that can help make a child’s nursery more stimulating.

    1. Themed room

Pick a theme for the child’s nursery that relates to something you hope they will become familiar with from an early age. Some popular ideas are animals (a farm or safari theme), the alphabet and numbers, the ocean and ocean dwellers, seasons or night and day. Speak to your interior designer about ways to incorporate them into your room’s decor, e.g., through wallpaper, borders, having a mural painted and finding corresponding accessories like lampshades, blinds and painted dressers.

    2. Decorate the ceiling

In its early months, a baby spends a lot of time on its back looking up towards the ceiling. Make use of this space – perhaps have contrasting colored patterns painted onto it or even a mural of the morning or night sky. You could choose several different designs depending on what each part of the room is used for, e.g., a plain design may be needed in the space where baby falls asleep. You can also add stimulating accessories like mobiles or hanging toys to certain areas.

    3. Create a library

Reading is a wonderful way to stimulate intelligence. Begin your child’s interest in books from a young age by incorporating a library into your nursery. You might opt to have a few shelves of books put up or maybe a few book cabinets erected. Perhaps add a rug or a rocking chair that you and your child can settle on while enjoying the library’s books.

    4. Define spaces

You’ll want your nursery to be both a stimulating environment and a calming space where your baby can be soothed during nap and bedtimes. Define areas in the room where baby can go to be stimulated and those where they can unwind and be put to sleep. In stimulating areas, the decor can include mobiles, colorful walls designs and items such as a play mat for tummy time. In calming areas, the decor can incorporate soothing colors, dim lighting, and furniture such as a rocking chair for bonding time between parent and baby.

    5. Toys and more toys!

Toys can be enjoyed at all ages, are visually stimulating to even a newborn and will also add another dimension to your decor if you want to display them in your nursery. If you have a themed room, you might choose to fill the room with toys relating to the theme. You may also want a designated area, perhaps a toy box or cupboard, where you can store toys at the end of the day. Ask your Seattle interior designer how you might incorporate toys into your chosen decor.
