A Disc Herniation Picture
June 16th, 2008Disc Herniation Picture – A layman may consider the disc herniation picture as Latin and Greek so lets try to compared what disc herniation is all about in words. The human vertebral column or spinal column consists of 33 vertebrae (bones) that run along the human neck connecting the skull to the pelvis. This vertebrae act as a shield for the nerves that come out from the brain and pass through the back into the rest of the body.
The spinal column is composed of discs that are like soft pads between hard bones that make up the spinal column. Inside these discs is a gelatinous substance which does the job of a shock absorber for the spinal column. The main parts of the spinal column are: Cervical (neck – portion behind skull) spine, thoracic (part of the back behind the chest) spine, lumbar (lower back) spine and sacral spine (the part which is connected to the pelvis and is not movable). In the lumbar spine the discs are covered with a thick layer of cartilage (annulus) and an inner gel like substance (nucleus).
Here are a few common terms for Disc Herniation: Pinched nerves, bulging disc, ruptured disc, radiculopathy, (radiculopathy refers to any disease that affects spinal nerves) sciatica and slipped disk are just a few of them. When a disc degenerates, it herniates it means that the inner core begins to extrude back into the spinal column.
The spinal disc becomes less elastic due to degeneration and the probability of a rapture increases. Just as when a disk raptures a portion of it would push outside the normal boundary and start bulging out from between the vertebrae. Due to the spinal nerves that are situated pretty close to the edge of the spinal discs the herniated disc poses a risk.
Symptoms of disc herniation: Herniated disk is considered as the most common source of pain in the neck, lower back, arms and legs. Few other symptoms include electric shock like pain, tingling and numbness in the cervical and lumbar region, muscle weakness, loss of bowel or bladder control which is to be handled as medical emergency. Sciatica (a condition wherein a sharp and shooting pain extends from buttocks down the back of one leg) is also a major symptom of disc herniation.
Factors that cause herniated discs: a herniated disk condition may develop either due to an accident or because of repetitive strenuous activities of the back, sudden strain on the back or also can develop gradually due to ageing and degeneration of discs. In the past few years there have been more sports related spinal injuries and C – Spine (Cervical) injuries have caused disc herniation in both contact sports like football, hockey and wresting and also in non contact sports like skiing, diving, surfing and equestrian events.
Diagnosis and treatments of disc herniation: Depending on a patient’s condition and symptoms, patients may be asked to undergo spine x-ray, spine CT, spine MRI, and EMG in order to properly diagnose herniated disc. Non-Surgical method of treatment may include rest and activity modification, physical therapy and hot and cold therapy, epidural steroid injections, oral steroid medications and NSAIDs (Non steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs).
Surgical Treatments are recommended and required at times of severe neurological damages that cause the patient to loose function and in conditions where no surgical treatments would prove unfruitful. Depending on the location and size of the disc herniation, surgical methods may include microdisketomy or laminectomy. Arthroscopic surgery is the least invasive surgery that involves the use of an arthroscope (a type of endoscope) for examination and treatment of herniated discs.

May 27th, 2008For most people, Neurontin (Gabapentin) will work for chronic back pain.
Neurontin is not excreted through the liver like most things, by excreted through the kidneys. It has been used for treatment of partial seizures in patients from the ages 3-12.
Neurontin was originally approved for sale in the mid 1990′s as a treatment for epileptic seizures. The FDA has approved this to treat epilepsy when it is used with another drug for pain related shingles. Neurontin is usually taken in 3 equal doses each day.
Gabapentin is indicated for the management of postherpetic neuralgia in adults. This medicine does not interact with other seizure medicines, so it can be used as an add on. It has not been approved to treat severe RLS (restless leg syndrome).
Neurontin is expensive for the treatment of chronic pain. This is one of the best selling drugs. The average cost is approximately $400 a month for 3200mg a day. The effects are very good even though it is an expensive drug to treat pain.
You can find Neurontin in breast milk which is the first oral medication approved by the FDA. The medicine has been used for off label uses and was prescribed for the medical condition epilepsy. One of the biggest selling points is that it has few side effects.
Neurontin does not produce any active or inactive metabolites and is not metabolized by the body. It can be taken with or without food orally. Neurontin is good for the nerve damage from chronic back pain and should not be used as pain management.
The manufacturer of Neurontin is Pfizer. It is so popular it is one of the 50 most prescribed drugs in the United States since 2003.
Neurontin is usually tried first because it is often better tolerated than other drugs. It has realatively mild side effects and passes through the body unmetabolized.
You Must Get Laser Spine Surgery Evaluations
May 26th, 2008The most important step before under taking a decision to undergo the procedure is Laser Spine Surgery Evaluations. As with any Evaluation system or procedure it’s process starts with basic information gathering. We first attempt to under what a laser is? It is an acronym for ‘Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiations’.
Surgery is an act of performing a surgical procedure. Laser surgery is a surgical procedure involving Laser where a scalpel used in ordinary surgery is replaced by a Laser scalpel which is nothing but a beam of light concentrated with energy of Laser Light used for cutting tissues. Laser surgeries fall under the category of minimally invasive surgeries. Spine surgeries are surgical procedures carried out on patients who suffer from acute spinal pain or back pain. Spinal surgeries can be performed either as open back or traditional surgeries and minimally invasive surgeries employing Laser.
MISS is an acronym for ‘Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery’. In MISS patients suffer far less trauma and can resume their normal activities much faster. Open back or conventional surgical procedures require large incisions, more anesthesias, and more operation time and more hospitalization time. Recuperation time and post operative care needed in MISS are far lesser compared to normal surgeries.
Either a local anesthesia or mild sedation would be required for laser surgeries unlike normal surgeries that require a patient have generalized anesthesia. Just up to recently laser MISS was considered to be unfeasible and regarded as unviable, now its gaining tremendous popularity due to its great advantages and benefits offered to the patient. Arthritis, narrowing of spine, large disc protrusion and bone spikes digging into nerves can also be addressed by laser spine surgeries.
Back pain or spinal pain can be attributed to several reasons. The symptoms of back pain are universal among all patients. Overall health can be destroyed by chronic back pain or incessant pain of a normal person. It can also affect his / her temper and personality.
After the cause of the pain is determined surgical procedures are performed on the patient to provide relief from the pain in the lower back, upper back, left and right arms, neck and legs. Laser technology is used to make accurate and precise incisions to access the affected area. Small surgical incisions are made that prevent the loss of blood. Hence therefore it reduces the pain and speeds up recovery time.
It’s imperative that a skilled and experienced laser spine surgeon be considered for the procedure. Before undergoing a laser spine surgery procedure you must complete your evaluations of the right surgeon and this could be a critical decision. You can use the internet to get information about a particular surgeon who specializes in such surgeries very easily. There are numerous form that cater to the medical field where you can join a Q&A session. A standard search engine can point you in the direction of lots of health related forums.
Compilations can arise even after undergoing laser spine surgery same as with conventional surgery. Discuss the complications that may arise during or after the surgery and it should be part of your laser spine surgery evaluation agenda.
