Lose Weight Faster With HIIT Training on the Treadmill

The great thing about HIIT is that your workouts are shorter, but the weight falls off faster. HIIT really became popular for treadmill owners when a study came out about a decade ago. The study involved test subjects who were put on exercise programs for five months. The subjects were put into two groups. The first group did steady pace cardio for 45 minutes. They started out at 60% of their maximum heart rate and by the time the study was over they were working out to 85% of their maximum heart rate.
Group two would start their routine by elevating their heart rates to 70% of their maximum heart rate. They would then follow this up with ten seconds of less intense exercise that decreased their heart rates, and then a 90 second burst of intense exercise that increased their heart rate, again. This was followed up with an interval of exercise that brought their heart rate back down. This HIIT routine was done over and over throughout their workout.
After the study was done experts concluded that the second group that had been doing HIIT used less energy and time working out during the five months. It was also found that the second group lost three times more fat than the other group, and the fat group two lost was primarily the fat that many people find so hard to get rid of, subcutaneous fat, or the fat that is directly beneath the skin.
What makes HIIT so great for weight loss is your body goes into EPOC, or Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption. In a nutshell, your body requires more oxygen to get back to its resting state which means you continue to burn calories even hours after you have completed a HIIT routine. In fact, a 2002 study showed the resting metabolic rate of participants was still elevated 48 hours later. This is great news for someone who wants to lose weight and get their metabolism boosted.
HIIT on a treadmill is fast and easy, but it is intense. Workouts should last anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes. Once you have warmed up, get your heart rate up to its maximum heart rate range. Follow this by intervals of exercise that will lower your heart rate and then raise it back up again. Change up the length of the intervals, or the number of intervals you do, depending on your personal preferences.
Experts recommend that HIIT be done two or three days a week. They don’t recommend doing it back to back because it is so intense. To relieve the stress on your body, put a day or two in between your HIIT routines. Don’t feel guilty on the days you aren’t doing HIIT, relax and know you are still burning calories and losing weight!

Keeping track of your heart rate and controlling how fast or slow your heart is working when you exercise is called heart rate training. Studies are showing that heart rate training helps people reach their exercise goals quicker and more efficiently.
To begin heart rate training you must determine your maximum heart rate. This number will be used to calculate your heart rate zones. However, before you test yourself to find out what your maximum heart rate is, be honest with yourself about your fitness level:
Poor Shape: You haven’t exercised in the past two months. Fair Shape: You do aerobic activity at least twenty minutes, or walk one mile or more, at least three times a week. Good Shape: You run at least five miles per week or you exercise almost every daily.
After you have determined your fitness level, you can do the following test to find your maximum heart rate. While this test won’t give you your exact maximum heart rate, it will get you in the immediate vicinity.
One Mile Walking Test: Go to a local track, or use a treadmill to walk at an even and steady pace for one mile. Take your heart rate during the last leg of your mile. If you are in poor shape, add 40. If you are in fair shape, add 50. If you are in good shape, add 60.
Now that you have determined your maximum heart rate, or maximum heart rate zone, you can start heart rate training. The most efficient and easiest way to monitor your heart rate during a workout is to use a treadmill, or other equipment, that is equipped with a heart rate control monitor. It will be your guide to let you know which heart rate zone you are in while you are working out. Using them will take the guess work out of your heart rate and let you know exactly where your heart rate is at any given moment. Machines, like treadmills, that come with heart rate control monitors act as your personal trainers and the numbers tell you whether you should maintain your pace, slow down a bit, or step it up a notch depending on your current heart rate zone.
Heart Rate Training Zones
A heart rate training routine should last between 20-30 minutes, and you should cycle in and out of the different heart rate zones throughout the workout.
Healthy Heart Zone: You feel comfortable and your heart rate is at 50%-60% of your maximum heart rate.
Fitness Zone: In this zone your heart rate is 60%-70% of your maximum heart rate and you may have trouble talking, unless it is in short sentences.
Aerobic Zone: Your breathing will be very hard and you won’t be able to talk with people in long sentences, but you can speak in short phrases. Your heart rate is 70%-80% of your maximum heart rate.
Anaerobic Zone: In this zone your heart rate is 80%-90% of your maximum heart rate and you should only be able to gasp out a word here and there because you will be breathing heavily.
Red Line Zone: You are in your maximum output zone and you will only be able to keep up the pace in this zone for a few minutes.
As you can see, heart rate training allows you to use every moment of your workout time more efficiently. Using a treadmill, or other machine, that is equipped with a heart rate monitor will help you know exactly what your heart is doing at all times. Using these machines will take the guesswork taken out of heart rate training so you can be certain that you are one workout closer to reaching your goals.
