Diaper Cakes: Cute and Functional For a New Baby

    July 23rd, 2009

Welcoming a new baby into your life will probably feel like one of the most important things you will ever do. Then same feeling also applies when you have friends who are to welcome a new baby home. You want to congratulate the family and celebrate with them, but you do not know what to give. In both cases, diaper cakes would be excellent choices.

What is it, you ask? Essentially, it is a bunch of baby diapers bunched together to form something that looks like a cake. Needless to say, even if it is a cake, you cannot eat it. It is not just that however; there is an art to it. You cannot just throw a bunch of diapers together, wrap them up and call it a diaper cake. There is an art to it, just like with everything else. The best of these would even fool the casual observer into thinking it was a real cake! These faux-cakes are often made with several concentric layers, each smaller than the one below it, like other celebratory cakes. They are trimmed with ribbons, bows, even small stuffed toys for that made-for-baby feel to it. Sometimes other baby-related items are used to make the “cake” more interesting, or added just to increase the utility value. For example, one such cake could use baby bottles as pillar supports for tall cakes.

When giving gifts to a family to welcome their baby (i.e. at a baby shower), it often comes down to a question of form and function. We worry about giving gifts that are too much fluff and not enough stuff. A couple, especially if it is their first baby, will most likely be ill-equipped to care for a baby. This is a clue to what you should get for them for the occasion of their new bouncing bundle of joy. You and they will want something that could help with getting the baby settled in, something to kick off the baby-rearing thing. Baby items like cribs and strollers are good, but they might be a mite expensive. Small items and consumables like infant formula, diapers, baby bottles, and pacifiers would be great. Those would be even better if you could present them with flair and style. A baby diaper cake does just that: it presents items that the new baby would need, and does it in a way that does not sacrifice cuteness and taste.

Why choose these novel constructs over other more traditional baby gift items? Furniture and large items like cribs and baby strollers can be expensive, plus the parents might want to choose for themselves. Baby clothes can be iffy, since you will need just the right size. Consumables are a good choice because they are sure to be useful, and are generally acceptable. A diaper cake has things that the new baby will definitely need and presents them tastefully — it is cute and functional! With My Diaper Cakes, choosing and buying a gift for welcoming a new baby has never been a better fusion of looks and usefulness!

    Choosing Protective Swimwears For Toddlers

    July 11th, 2009

Ultraviolet rays from the sun are dangerous for children. It causes skin cancer. Parents have the responsibility for protecting their children from the effects of the sun’s more harmful rays, especially now that the global temperature is rising. Even on cloudy days, the sun can still be damaging.

Thus, when you decide to go to the beach, make sure that your children are wearing UV protective clothing with a sun factor of 40 or more to prevent the occurrence of skin damage. There are swimsuits that are a great way to protect your toddlers from sun exposure. These swimwears ensure that your toddler has an SPF 50 sun block on most of his or her body when you’re at the pool or beach. It is also made of comfortable and durable fabric, which can give you an extra peace of mind. With this type of swimwear, you won’t need to reapply sunscreen to prevent sunburns to your baby. And if you want more protection from the sun for your toddler, then a matching swim hat can protect your baby from head to toe.

The advantage of using this type of beach clothing is that the sun block can stay on your baby since it’s part of the swimsuit. It also has an easy snaps and zippers for putting swimsuit on and changing diapers. Another advantage is that it has a breathable and comfortable fabric with a built-in SPF 50 sun protection. Thus, it can block up to 97% of the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays. It also has a wide range of baby and toddler sizes and styles with coordinating accessories like hats, swim shirts and blankets, which adds extra sun protection for baby.

The disadvantage is that this type of swimsuit can cost more than average baby swimsuits. A baby and toddler swimsuits can cost about $40. But the advantages outweighs more than the disadvantages because with this swimwear, you can help prevent sunburn for your children. And you won’t also need to worry that they are playing too long under the sun.

The good news is that there are now many companies that are providing UV protective swimwear and sun hats for young children and toddlers. However, it is not recommended that babies less than 12 months old should feel the effects of the sun on their skin. Thus, when you are looking for UV protection swimwear clothing, it is important that you look for suits that comes with a 40+ or 50+ sun blocking effect and is approved by an official body as UV protection clothing.

Also, you have to keep in mind that your toddler’s scalp is also vulnerable to the effects of the sun. Babies with short or sparse hair can leave the scalp unprotected. So parents should also encourage their toddlers to wear sun hats. But if they don’t want to wear a hat, then you need to use a lotion on the scalp with an SPF of at least 30 or 40.

Online Shopping: Finding the Exact Baby Garments For Less

    July 6th, 2009

Shopping for baby clothing is always not an easy task. There are a lot of things you have to consider such as durability, costs, comfort, and safety, not to mention the long lines at the cash register that you have to endure and is very time consuming. With the wide selection of baby clothing in the market, it is only understandable to get confused whether we are getting the right kind of stuff for our little ones. Also, there is the issue of cost. Baby items can really be expensive especially those that are found in baby clothing shops and department stores. But fear not, here are a few tips that will help you find the right baby items for less and on the comfort of your very own home.

When buying baby clothing, always look for fabrics that naturally cool, comfortable, soft, and weather appropriate. If you can find clothing that is stain resistant and formula resistant, you will do well in choosing this kind of clothing. This will spare you from all the hassle of removing stains of which baby clothes are prone to.

Buy diapers that are leak-proof or with leak-guards as frequent leaking may damage the clothes pretty soon. Cheaper brands have the tendency to leak a lot so choose a high-quality diaper.

It is natural for babies to keep on moving while changing them or when we dress them up, so make sure to select baby garments with popper buttons to make the task easier. Besides, this type of clothing is convenient especially when you take the baby outdoors, since you have to change diapers frequently.

When shopping online for baby clothes, check out if they have baby clothing packs or bundles. These can save you a lot of money; however, make sure not to compromise comfort from savings. Comfort should always come first. Choose one-piece outfits for convenience. Check out some good brands and see if they are on sale. Online sales usually offers a price lower than department store items.

There are online sites that also sell gently-used baby items. Some of these baby clothes have a high-quality brand and some are actually bought from famous designer shops, however since babies tend to grow up quickly, mothers are forced to put them on sale so that they can clear out the baby closet and put new set of clothes for their kids. These items are usually priced low and the clothes looks good as new because most of them are worn for only a week or two.

With online shopping, you can not only find the right baby clothes for your little bundle of joy, but you can also buy other items like cribs, feeding bottles, baby furniture, and many others. What’s more, you don’t have to spend on gasoline, or drive miles away and spend long hours of rummaging the shelves of the malls and lining up on the cash register. A few clicks and typing on your computer and all is done. Also, some companies are actually covering the shipping cost of your bought items and your orders are delivered right through your doorstep in a couple of days. So what are you waiting for? Start your shopping online!

Ways to Remove Spit-Up Stains From Baby Clothes

    July 6th, 2009

When you are expecting a new baby, shopping for baby items especially clothes can be really fin and entertaining, especially for first time parents. With a wide selection of baby clothes in the market it is easy to fill in the little one’s closet before he or she is born. As you might expect, sooner or later the baby will do a lot spitting on his or her clothes, making you wince when you see the stains on the nice clothes you bought for him or her. Fear not, following these steps will help you restore the stained baby clothes good as new.

    Choosing the Right Fabric

Before you pay for that nice outfit, make sure to read the fabric labels. The recommended fabrics are those that use natural fabrics such as cotton as they are naturally breathable. Furthermore, baby clothes made from cotton are easy to care for and have a lasts long when being washed properly. The resiliency of the fabric is a determining factor for removing stains effectively. Cotton responds well to stain removing agents and is often recommended by companies who manufacture stain removing solutions. It is also important not to over dry the cotton clothes in the dryer as it may easily damage the fabric. Remove the clothes from the dryer while they are still quite damp and hang them on clothes line to air dry.

    Choosing the Right Detergent

When you go to the grocery store, you will notice that there is a wide variety of detergent on the shelves. Get the ones that are specifically made for baby clothes. Unlike adults, babies are most likely to get rashes, especially when we use certain products with harsh formulas. Detergents that are designed for baby clothing are generally free from dyes and perfumes. These special detergents are also a bit costly so it is better to wash other family members clothing separately. One more thing, instead of using a fabric softener, you might consider using a half cup of white vinegar as it is a natural fabric softener and also good at removing residual detergent that are left on the clothes.

Choosing the Right Stain Removal Agent

Assuming that you have chosen the right fabric and the right detergent, we can now discuss the right stain removal agent that you could use for the baby’s garments. Before washing the baby’s clothing you need to pre-treat the stains first. Otherwise, there is a big possibility for the stain to become permanent making it more difficult to remove. Milk spit-ups are classified as protein based stains which means, we need to break the fatty acids with the use of surfactants that are usually found in stain remover pre-treat solutions. Let it sit for two to three minutes to let the fatty acids release the protein part of the stain. Afterwards, you may now apply an oxygen-based stain remover to get rid of the protein stain. Let is sit for a couple of minutes as well. Once it is done, you may now wash the clothes as you normally would. After the wash cycle is completed, check the stains if it is still noticeable. If you can still see the stain, repeat the steps from the beginning until it is finally removed. The moment the stain is fully eliminated you may now put the clothes in the dryer.

Follow these steps and you will surely keep the stains under control.

Selecting the Right Clothing For Babies

    June 23rd, 2009

Babies seem to outgrow clothing at a distressing rate. So when you’re purchasing clothes for your babies, it’s significant to think about what you’re purchasing, not just in terms of cost, but also in terms of its suitability for your little angle.

With babies, it’s vital to keep in mind that they feel the cold most of the time. It takes some time for their tiny bodies to learn how to adapt to different weather conditions, and so it’s up to you to ensure your child is dressed accordingly. I was told once that you must constantly dress up an infant in one layer more than you’re wearing, and I’ve noticed that to be a good principle. If you’re in a specifically chilly environment, always bear in mind that baby’s extremities should be well-covered with a hat, gloves, and perhaps drape a thick blanket as well. If baby starts to sweat or his skin turns red, you may be dressing him up too warmly for the weather.

The other side of this, too, is to take care throughout warmer weather. Babies might resist producing their own body heat, but they’re trying to learn to cool themselves down. Clothe baby in cooler and with airy material, but still check to ensure baby’s body parts are warm.

It doesn’t what temperature it is, infant’s clothes should allow unrestricted movement to all part’s of the baby’s body. Garments that are very tight could interrupt circulation to a part of the infant’s body. This is sometimes true once baby learns how to roll over and crawl – he has to be able to do those activities without being restricted by baby clothes. Dresses may appear very adorable on your baby girl, but can be very difficult during crawling.

The material where the cloth is made from is also significant. A baby’s skin is ultra sensitive, and rough materials may potentially cause irritation. You also may discover using a special baby detergent is finest when washing baby’s garments, as it is also less likely to cause irritation and skin problems.

A baby’s clothing shouldn’t have too many embellishments, like ribbons or buttons. If these things are detached, they could be a potential choking hazard for the baby.

Also remember, that most of infants don’t like having their diaper or clothes removed. So something that can help out making the process fast and simple is worth having in the baby’s wardrobe. I constantly had heaps of baby jumpsuits or onesies in my baby’s wardrobe. These contain snaps or pop studs from the neck down to the knees. That means it was feasible to change the diaper without having to take away much clothing, but simultaneously it was simpler to remove the whole jumpsuit and replace it in only a couple of seconds. The other thing I prefer about these was how simply you could put in layers of clothing or blankets on top of the baby if the baby gets cold, and taking them out them if baby feels hot.

Money Saving Tips in Buying Baby Clothes

    June 23rd, 2009

It’s very simple to spend a lot when you have a newborn infant especially when it comes to baby garments and stuff that your baby will sooner outgrow. Planning in advance and doing some shopping for baby garments based on the baby’s growth will aid in cutting down the expenses. These suggestions may assist you in planning your next visit to the baby store to shop for clothes.

Purchasing baby clothes that are a wonderful fit is false economy as your infant will pretty soon outgrow all of them. It is more sensible and cost-effective to buy clothes in a larger size as your baby will very soon grow into them and those clothes will last longer for more than a two or three weeks.

It is an advisable idea when selecting clothes according to age, such as seven months or ten months, to work out the period when your little angel is old enough to use them. It’s not recommended to buy summer clothes for a seventh month old infant if it will be the middle of winter before they finally fit.

If you have ever tussled to get a squirming or crying baby dressed, you will find out that buying clothes with back openings or the one that has to go over the head is not a nice idea. Front opening garments with either poppers or Velcro fastenings saves you and your infant a lot of stress and time.

Ensure that you have enough clothing. Food often trickles on to your baby’s garments during feeding time and babies often spit up or throw up on their clothes. Whenever untidy accidents happen, you’ll need a new set of fresh clothes ready for your infant to put on.

It is constantly a nice idea to check out the clearance sales in stores first before opting to pay regular prices. Most department stores of baby clothing shops have bargain sales, especially when they are changing into seasonal clothes, and oftentimes they offer even a good discount at the cash register. If you buy during clearance sale, you can surely save a lot of money.

Don’t be too swollen with pride to receive second hand or slightly used clothing from family members and close friends. This can help you save a lot of money. Babies from birth until nine months old do not wear their clothes out so that means most of it will be almost new. You may also discover that some of the clothes haven’t even been worn as frequently parents are given more baby garments than what their baby actually needs.

Make some profit out from old baby clothes. Selling baby clothes your little one has outgrown is a good way to bring in a little added income. There are lots of places where you sell baby clothes and get some cash an example would be eBay, thrift stores, garage sales and online selling. You might not make loads of cash and will definitely not get what you originally paid for, but still, you’ll in any case get some of your money back.

Retired Grandparents Are Home Schooling Children

    May 19th, 2009

There has been a trend in recent decades for grandparents to take on the role of teacher to their grandchildren. These are the tales of grandparents who are not just stepping in for the occasional help with homework, but are actually taking the position of teacher via setting up a legal home school and taking full responsibility for the education of their grandchildren.

While this may sound hard to believe, the fact remains that many grandparents are choosing to take such drastic measures for the benefit of their grandchild. One of the main motivating factors is an agreed family dislike of public schools; a belief that has been well supported by numerous front page incidents involving students at high schools. In these situations, parents and grandparents most likely agree that if possible home schooling would be preferable for their offspring, so their child did not have to attend public school. These concerns are real and valid points, and it is a natural point that some families reach.

The problem, however, tends to arise when the parents realize that although they would prefer their child to be home schooled, they simply do not have the time to do it themselves. Financial pressures mean that few families can afford for one parent not to work, instead focusing on educating the children and home schooling itself is of course unpaid. Thus, in most instances, the situation is swept under the carpet and the parents resign themselves to their child having to attend public school as the demands on their time and finances mean there is little option.

It is in these instances that some family units realize there is an option, and this comes from the grandparents. Grandparents are able to take the place of a home school teacher due to a general freedom of time, primarily due to retirement. Providing the grandparent is willing to go back to school, in a way, and educate their grandchild; the notion of grandparents tutoring their grandchildren can be a blinding flash of brilliance that solves the problematic worries of a public school education.

The process of becoming a home school teacher for your grandchild is surprisingly simple, and in reality is not hugely different from the process of parents schooling their children. Although variances and nuances will apply to certain cases, by and large the application to home school a grandchild is simple. One must set up a legal home school, a process which varies from state to state. The exact nuances of this process are dependent on your state and district, but education authorities and libraries can help provide you with the exact process. Also check notice boards for support groups for people who are already homeschooling their children; these are the people that have been there and set up a home school, and their advice and support will be invaluable.

All of these methods will help walk through the process, with the eventual result meaning you could soon be home schooling your grandchildren and giving them the best possible start in life.

    Grandparents and Visitation

    May 19th, 2009

Thankfully, for most grandparents visitation rights to see their grandchildren are something they never need worry about. Most families have their own, friendly system which allows grandchild and grandparent to bond and spend time together. However, in some unfortunate cases, communication between parents and their child, son or daughter in law breaks down to such an extent that the grandparents are denied the right to see their own grandchild.

This is obviously a distressing situation, particularly for the grandparent but also for the child. In these cases, the grandchild is being used as a tool to fuel an argument or disagreement, and both adult parties can soon forget that they should be observing the child’s best interest. If you have found yourself in a situation where access to your grandchild is being denied by their parents, there is fortunately something you can do about it.

Although rare, there are cases where a grandparent has taken their child or in laws to court to attain visitation rights for their grandchildren. For many, this is the last roll of the dice in an effort to be able to see and bond with grandchildren, and it should never be treated as a first option. However, in some cases communication breaks down to such a point that there is no other option than to try and gain visitation rights to a grandchild through the courts.

The first and most important step is to know what you’re dealing with; find a good, reliable lawyer who specializes in Family Law. You need someone who knows the ins and outs of cases concerning grandparent visitation. The first point your lawyer should be able to address is whether or not your home state hears cases regarding grandparent visitation.

For it is an unfortunate fact that not all 50 states currently have legislation which allows them to hear these particular cases. Your lawyer should be able to inform you if you are in one of the states that do have the requisite legal system, or you can contact your local government or court office and ask the question. In some way, however, all states deal with rights for Grandparents – though some require certain criteria to be met.

Some states, such as California, have very strict guidelines of when they will hear a visitation case from a grandparent. These include considerations of the best interest of the child, some history of a prior relationship between the grandparent and grandchild, an effect on the parent and child relationship and if the visitation has been withdrawn due an adoption by a step parent. Other states are more open, with only a few requirements – although the best interests of the child are always a consideration, regardless of state.

By talking to your lawyer and researching on the internet, you will soon learn if you have a case applicable for your state. You will then need to begin assembling evidence and preparing for a meeting with a judge. This is a long, arduous process – but success rates are good, and if all else genuinely has failed, this may be the way to go to ensure you can see your grandchildren.

Thrifty Living Activities – Keep Your Children Busy With Thrifty Theme Days

    May 12th, 2009

Keeping your children busy can be a challenge any time of the year, but it becomes even more of a challenge in the summer months. Finding thrifty activities can present more of a problem. When the day is long and the kids are bored, try implementing a theme day.

Here are four examples to get you started,

    Color Day:

Choose a color and have everyone in the family wear that color, make food that is mostly that color, create some artwork using the color of the day, use the color in as many sentences as possible throughout the day, have everyone make a list of everything they can think of that is the color of the day, read a book that is either about that color or is about colors, for older children – have them find a book with the color in the title, get out a set of crayons and see how many varieties of the color the family can find and color pictures using those crayons, make a cake or cupcake and color the frosting the color of the day, have the children write and perform a play about the color, and finally – take a picture of the family and using a photoshop program, either on your own computer or at your local copy or camera store, change the base color of the photo and put it in a scrapbook. In fact you can take pictures all day and create a small scrapbook of the whole day.

    Astronaut Day:

Everyone wear either white jumpsuits or white pants and shirts, make rockets out of paper towel rolls and construction paper, drink Tang and eat food bars and energy bars, for meals try to think of things that could be eaten in a space ship, for younger children make a space ship out of a large box with holes cut out of the front and sides for windows, read a story or book about space, make a mobile out of clothes hangers with string and planets made of construction paper, draw pictures of either astronauts or planets, after dark look at the stars, have each child write a story about their life as an astronaut, play a game of marbles and pretend they are planets, make a poster of an astronaut with a seperate picture of the bubble helmet and play Pin The Helmet On The Astronaut, have everyone think of an activity related to astronauts or space, and finally – take a picture of the whole family and put it in a scrapbook.

    Princess Day:

If your children are girls, have everyone dress as a princess using either dress up clothes they already have or some old scarves and dresses, have a tea party with finger sandwiches – just make regular sandwiches with the crust cut off and cut into fourths, have a fashion show to show off the gowns they are wearing, color pictures of princesses, make crowns and wear them, read a story about a princess, write and perform a play about being a princess, for older girls write who they would help in the world if they had the power of a princess, and finally – take a picture of the whole family and put it in a scrapbook.

    Animal Day:

Everyone choose an animal to be for the day, dress as that animal or even in the colors of that animal, have each child pick their animal name, eat animal cookies for a snack, make masks out of paper plates or construction paper, read a story about each animal, have each child draw and color a picture of the animal they are for the day, play Red Rover using the animal names, play any board games that you have that are animal related, go outside and run around like animals, have each child do a skit acting like their animal, for older children see how many words they can make out of the letters of their animal – for example elephant could produce the words “the”, “ant”, “thee”, “pant”, etc., have them write their favorite things about their animal, and finally – take a picture of the whole family and put it in a scrapbook.

The theme days you and your family can come up with are endless. Just enjoy your thrifty theme days and your summer.
