Our Own Christmas Morning Traditions
April 27th, 2009I settle most of my sensitive life in the North West. Almost all the time Christmas was without snow. The day following Christmas, if it wasn’t raining, we would go to our neighboring par 3 golf-course. So, all those dreamy pictures of snow on the soil at Christmas, was unknown to me.
We had our Christmas morning customs, which were distressing for us children. But I remember it with partiality. I even tried to initiate it to my very own family, and it was swiftly pinched in the bud as mean, and that kids shouldn’t have to undergo that deferred gratification.
Our Christmas tree in no way went up until Christmas eve. We would constantly bother our mother about setting up the tree, but we learned that this was really one of Santa’s and his elves responsibilities. They were believed to put up the Christmas tree and put the gifts beneath when they were done.
Several years later my sister and I, wondered at how our parents were capable to set up, and adorn the tree, and put the gifts beneath in one night.
Christmas morning for us was stern, our parents made certain that a stern procedure was It adhered to. The three of us children would be coming up for our Dad’s wake up call on Christmas morning. We would gobble up our breakfast and slurp our eggnog as fast as possible, only to be informed that we can open up our gifts once the dishes were completed.
Talk about buzzing and howling – the eagerness of opening the gifts was killing us! After much gnashing of teeth- this was torment for us kids. We would proclaim that all of the dishes were finished. Our mother would enter and check and confirm that all was in order. If she found something not to her liking, we had to remedy the difficulty. If our parents were happy that everything was suitable, we were given permission into the cache room to open up our gifts.
It was frequently three hours before we were permitted to begin opening our gifts. I chuckle whenever I reflect about this immediate gratification generation coming up that long before they could unwrap their presents. My children start buzzing and complaining if they have to wait 15 minutes for some lethargic bones to get out of bed.

It gives a feeling of peace and reason to the world that sometimes feel cold and unloving.

Creating New Christmas Traditions
April 27th, 2009When I was but a small girl, I adored being in the kitchen with my Mom, especially when she was preparing Christmas dinner. I have plenty of warmhearted memoirs of my Mom in her hand embroidered apron standing above a stove-top full with pots and pans filled with delectable aroma. The table was constantly set with the finest porcelain with a hand embroidered table cloth. I recall licking the beaters of the mixer once the mashed potatoes were finished. I recall my Dad carving the turkey at the dinner table. Whenever I notice the Norman Rockwell painting, which illustrates a woman putting a huge turkey on the dinner table in front of her family, I recall one of our family Christmas dinner.
When I got married and had my very own family I wanted to ensure that my daughters would have the similar sort of recollections to take with them and to impart with their own kids one day. I began including them in kitchen works early on. I would like them to be capable of cooking, and to benefit from it. At present my daughter’s are in their 20′s and they equally have own kids, and we all gather to prepare our family Christmas dinner.

The family’s much loved stuffing is really cooked on the side. It’s something I learned to cook from my mother-in-law, a Sage Sausage and an Apple Stuffing. It’s tangy and hearty and prepared even more delicious since we use home-produced turkey broth to make it.
We have several new menus we’ve included to our Christmas dinner menu. One is called Pearl Onions AuGratin, and another is the Brussels Sprouts and Bacon. The brussels sprouts are tattered in the food processor, together with the onion. Bacon is cooked brown and the brussels sprouts are cooked using a small amount of bacon fat. The bacon is then crushed on top. Everyone in the family fancy this recipe, even my youngest five year old grandson.
My grandson is also trying to learn to cook. To keep his attention in the kitchen his mother lets him to cook his preferred food. This is my Mom’s fudge. It’s constantly on our Christmas dessert table, along with the Red Velvet Cake, which is also my mom’s recipe.
It’s especially entertaining that everybody takes pleasure in the kitchen and we really enjoy cooking together. My oldest daughter is expecting with her first child. We all can’t hang around to have one more set of hands in the kitchen.
